KIDNEY STONES

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys

 DIAGNOSIS

TREATMENT

Treatment options depend on the size, type, and location of the stones:

  • Drinking lots of Fluids (NOT BEER!)
  • Pain Relievers
  • Medications like alpha blockers and low dose steroids may help in relaxing the ureter and ease passage of small stones
  • Antibiotics may be needed in case of infection

LASER STONE TREATMENT

  • Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL): Uses sound waves to break stones into smaller pieces that can be passed more easily.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive medical procedure used to treat kidney stones by breaking them into smaller pieces that can be more easily passed through the urinary tract.

If you are considering ESWL as a treatment option, discuss with your healthcare provider to understand if it is the right choice based on your specific situation, stone characteristics, and overall health.

  • Ureteroscopy (URSL):  For lower ureteric stonesa thin semirigid scope is inserted through the urethra and bladder to remove or break up the stone.

Ureteroscopy (URSL) is a valuable tool in urology for managing stones and other conditions in the ureters and kidneys. If you're considering URSL, discuss with your healthcare provider to determine if it is the best option for your condition based on the size and location of the stones, as well as your overall health.

  • Flexible ureteroscopy (RIRS): A slender flexible scope is passed into the kidney from urethra and laser is used to break the stones.

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) offers a minimally invasive option for managing kidney stones, particularly in complex cases. If you are considering RIRS, consult with a urologist to determine if it is the best option based on the size, location, and characteristics of your stones, as well as your overall health condition

  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): A surgical procedure where a small incision is made in the back to remove large stones.
